Canary Island Cruises
Nestled between the coasts of Spain and Africa the Canary Islands are a breathtaking destination that offer amazing shore excursions on your European cruise. At the time of this writing three of the islands can be visited by cruise ships: Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Palma. However, cruise lines are constantly expanding their itineraries to accommodate the wishes of their passengers, and with many other beautiful isles to potentially visit it is only a matter of time before Gomera, Fuerteventura, El Hierro and Lanzarote are accessible by ship. You will need to do your homework as not every cruise line that sails the Western Mediterranean offers shore excursions in this region.
The main stop on your Canary Island cruise will be the city of Las Palmas, the largest city in the isles, and the capital of Gran Canaria. Here you can visit the beautiful beaches Playa de las Canteras and Playa de las Alcaravaneras. However, this 541 year old city offers much more beyond just beautiful beaches and you can see the stunning cultural heritage of this region throughout the city, particularly in the Vegueta region which in 1990 was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
On Tenerife you can visit the Mount Teide volcano, which stands as the highest mountain in Spain. This isle is the largest of the seven Canary Islands and is known throughout the world as the Island of Eternal Spring due to its year-round mild temperatures that range from 22-28 degrees 365 days a year. Bottlenose dolphins can frequently be spotted in the waters off the coast of Tenerife and if you really want to see an impressive sight visit the spectacular Teno massif or Cliffs of the Giants on the northwestern quadrant of the island.
