Cruise Shore Excursions - Are They Worth The Money?

When planning your European cruise you likely have two main considerations in mind: the quality/luxury/amenities of the ship and the amazing ports of call you will get to visit along the way. However, there is a third factor that should play a role in your cruise planning: cruise shore excursions.

Most European cruise ships will visit several ports of call during your voyage, and often spend the better part of the day docked to allow the passengers to go ashore and experience the culture, see the historic sights, and sample the world-class cuisine of Europe’s finest cities. However, if you are looking for a little more adventure than just roaming around soaking in the local ambiance, then you have the option of booking a shore excursion through your cruise line.

These cruise shore excursions can encompass just about anything, from guided tours inland to see artisans from local villages to ballooning, caving, or scuba diving. They add an element of fun and adventure to your cruise for those who want a little added adrenaline on their vacation. Be aware though that these shore excursions are almost never included in the base price of your cruise. They will cost extra if you want to embark on these intriguing day trips. So, the question remains, are cruise shore excursions worth the money?

The answer isn’t cut and dry. It depends very much on your independent skills as a traveler, and your level of comfort in doing things yourself. If you book your shore excursion adventure through your cruise line everything will be arranged from soup to nuts, and you have no worries of anything happening that may cause you to miss the departure of your ship. You will likely pay a premium for this peace of mind, however. Many of the same day trips can be booked in advance online once you know your cruise ship’s itinerary. However, making arrangements, and making sure your guide gets you back to the ship on time are solely your responsibility, and there is certainly more margin for error if you choose this option. On the plus side you have far more choices available if you make the plans yourself, and by shopping around and even doing a little haggling you can often save a good chunk of money.

In short, cruise shore excursions are worth the money if you want to relax and have your vacation taken care of step by step. If you are more of an adventurous soul and are willing to take the risk of something going wrong then you might want to explore the internet and see what kind of deals you can find.
