Cruise The Rhine River – The Ultimate Vacation
There are so many incredible European river cruise vacations to choose from that narrowing it down to just one can be very difficult. Ultimately, it will be the regions you want to visit that will determine which voyage you take, and if you want to see Germany then the best option you can choose is to cruise the Rhine River.
There are several cruise companies that sail the Rhine including Trafalgar, Tauck, Uniworld, Viking, and Peter Deilmann. All of these companies offer similar experiences, however the luxury, amenities and entertainment will vary depending on your budget.
Known as the Rhein River in Germany, this magnificent waterway also flows through other major European countries like France and Switzerland. It is one of Europe’s most important rivers, acting as a major shipping lane as well as an incredible tourist destination. The Rhine also joins up with many of Europe’s other rivers, allowing spin-off river tours to countries like Austria, the Netherlands, and even Hungary. This makes it even easier to put together a multi-leg journey if you are going to be in Europe for a considerable amount of time.
There are numerous shore excursion options available to you. You can visit the town of Strausbourg in the Alsace region of France, where influence from French and German culture are equally in evidence. Visit the thousand year old cathedral of Holy Roman Emporor Heinrich II in Bamsberg, Germany. In Switzerland you can make a stop at Basel, the country’s second largest city where you can visit the museum of fine art, a historic venue where you can view the works of masters like Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso.
However, the highlight of any Rhein River voyage is the Castles along the Rhine tour, a nine day voyage offered by Uniworld. Along the middle Rhine valley you will see numerous medieval castles in the greatest concentration to be found of any river valley in the world. In the backdrop of these magnificent fortresses are quaint old-world towns and spectacular vineyards. The region is truly breathtaking, and this region has been a favorite theme for many of Europe’s great artists and musicians, who’ve immortalized the region in paintings and song. Even Beethoven and Wagner had a love of this region, and their music reflects that love.
Whether you are a romantic, a wine lover, a history buff, or a little of all you will be enchanted by the wonders of a cruise on the Rhine River. If you have the time and the budget to make this journey then I heartily recommend you do. You won’t regret it.
