Eastern Caribbean Cruises – The Highlights

If you are a first time cruiser then an Eastern Caribbean cruise might be the best way to get your feet wet to see if this is the type of vacation you enjoy. Because you are traveling in a relatively small area the time spent at sea is minimized and shore excursion opportunities abound. The weather is consistently warm no matter what time of year you are traveling and you have the opportunity to participate in a number of water activities including scuba diving and snorkeling, fishing, waterskiing and more. Also, the Eastern Caribbean is an immensely popular destination and numerous cruise lines ply its waters so you will have a number of itineraries and cruise ships to choose from.

For U.S. citizens the U.S. Virgin Islands and St. Thomas are ideal. No need for a passport as these are U.S. protectorates. St. Thomas is renowned for its shopping, its breathtaking beaches, great fishing and snorkeling. Little wonder it is one of the busiest cruise ship ports in the world! If you are looking for a more laid back destination you can always take a short jaunt over to St. Croix or St. John.

Looking for something a little more exotic? Tortola in the British Virgin Islands might just fit the bill. With a West Indian feel to it, incredible natural wonders including soaring mountain peaks, powdery sand beaches and tropical fruit trees the island is truly an exotic beauty. For those who love to sail Tortola is also a world class sailing and yachting destination.

One of the jewels of the Caribbean has to be St. Lucia. It is a popular spot for both eco-tourists and honeymooners. It is arguably the most breathtaking island in the Caribbean when viewed from shipboard, thanks in large part to its pair of soaring volcanoes (the Pitons) that dominate the landscape.

Other highlights of an Eastern Caribbean cruise includes the destinations of St. Martin, Barbados, Dominica, Guadeloupe and Martinique. Each of these beautiful ports offers visitors something a little different in terms of culture and natural scenery.

Whatever itinerary you choose you are sure to enjoy an Eastern Caribbean cruise. It might be the first cruise you ever take, but it is very unlikely it will be your last.
