European Cruise Destinations - Norway

If you have been dreaming about taking a European cruise odds are the dream vacation you have in mind is a sun-soaked Mediterranean voyage, or perhaps a river cruise in the South of France. However, if you fancy yourself more of an adventure traveler, and want to visit destinations not seen by the bulk of Europe’s cruise travelers there are other options available to you that might be more suited to your sense of exploration. One such adventure that is becoming increasingly popular is a Norway coastal cruise.

The unique thing about a Norwegian cruise that really sets it apart from southern European voyages is how quickly you become integrated into the local culture as you travel. One of the main reasons for this is the ship itself. You see Norway’s Hurtigruten ships are actually working vessels, not just fancy cruise liners. In Norway they value substance over style, and the lower decks of your Hurtigruten cruise ship is actually packing freight, while the upper portion of the vessel is carrying passengers. That being said, you can still expect plenty of luxury, amenities and activities onboard to keep you entertained between the ports of call you will visit along the way.

Speaking of ports of call, there are more than 30 of them available to choose from in this region! You can visit spectacular waterfalls and see magnificent glaciers as you visit Lofoten, Lapland, and Sognefjord. Looking for something more cosmopolitan? Oslo offers world class dining and shopping experiences. For the truly hardy and adventurous you can visit Kirkenes, a frigid arctic outpost near the Russian border. And for a spectacular sampling of the region you can’t miss Bergen, the capital of the fjords district, bustling with activity and bursting with local charm. These examples are just a small sample of what you can see on a fjords cruise. Hammerfest, Trondheim, Rorvik, Ornes, Stamsund and many more destinations await you on your adventure.

A Norway coastal cruise isn’t just a vacation, it is an adventure that you will remember for the rest of your life. If sitting by a pool, sipping drinks with wee umbrellas is how you want to spend your days, then by all means stick to the balmy Mediterranean, but if you want to see spectacular untouched rugged wilderness, and really experience the local culture on a personal level then this is the cruise vacation for you.
