European River Cruises - Some Tips Before You Go

If you have been on cruise vacations before and are looking for a new or different sort of adventure then a European river cruise is definitely the way to go. Instead of sailing the wide open sea where hours or even days can go by with little scenery but the endless blue ocean you can instead navigate the narrow waterways of Europe, where hundreds of years of history and culture is always just a few hundred feet away. On a river cruise you can travel inland and visit countries and regions not accessible by the large ships found on the Mediterranean and Baltic seas.

Choosing a cruise line

There are dozens of companies that offer European river cruises, including Viking, Uniworld, Avalon Waterways and more. Uniworld is a particularly popular company with more than 30 years in the business, and they offer voyages on most of Europe’s popular rivers, including the Danube, Rhine, Seine, and even the Volga River in Russia. They also have operations in Egypt and China, so if you’ve already explored Europe with them you can move on to the Nile or Yangtze Rivers for a whole new type of adventure. With more than 500 departures annually they offer something for every budget and taste. You can read our Uniworld river cruise review here.

Choosing a time of year

What you can see and the experiences you will have depend upon the time of year you want to travel. A Netherlands cruise in the spring is especially lovely and you will see incredibly lush flora as you drift lazily by. Summertime is the best time to be in the South of France, and you can enjoy the spectacular views that were the inspiration of the great artist Van Gogh as you travel the waterways of the Saone or Rhone Rivers.

Even winter cruises are popular in some regions and on a Danube or Rhine river cruise you will be given the opportunity to visit the famous Christmas markets in Austria.

Whichever you choose rest assured that a European river cruise will be a vacation you will never forget. Whether it is a romantic getaway for couples, an adventure for the whole family, or a singles cruise where you hope to meet the love of your life there is a cruise vacation package to meet your needs.
