Highlights of a Douro River Cruise

If you are planning a Douro river cruise in the northern region of Portugal then you are in for a treat. This is a common journey undertaken by those who’ve acquired a taste for Port and table wine as this region is world-renowned for their vineyards.

Porto

After spending time exploring the ancient city of Lisbon you’ll be taken to Porto, another of Europe’s oldest cities to begin your Douro river cruise adventure.

Before you even raise anchor you’ll have the option of taking a Porto shore excursion. The city has been granted World Heritage Status by Unesco and for those who appreciate ancient architecture it is truly a feast for the eyes. From churches dating back centuries to the magnificent archways in many of the town’s houses you’ll find your eyes constantly in motion, drinking in the ambiance all around you.

Navigating its twisting narrow streets is an experience in itself, and when you finally emerge into open space you are treated to the miles upon miles of beautiful vineyards stretching away into the distance.

If you have time make sure you stop at the Vila Nova de Gaia and sample some of their exceptional wine. Definitely a treat before returning to your ship and beginning the first leg of your journey.

Regua

Your first full day of cruising will take you to Regua. Along the way you will pass the locks of Crestuma and Carrapelato and get your first taste of the breathtaking scenery the journey offers. Wander through the gardens of Solar de Mateus or take an optional excursion to Vila Real before returning to your ship.

Vega de Teron

After a day spent sailing through the heart of the port vineyards you’ll pass through another pair of locks (Valeria and Pocinho) before arriving in Vega de Teron. Here it is absolutely recommended you take the optional excursion to Salamanca where you can take in the amazing architecture with Roman, Christian and Arabic influences. The stunning beauty of the area has made it another Unesco World Heritage Site.

Feradosa

One final recommendation before your cruise comes to a close: In Ferradosa you will have the option of taking a port wine tasting excursion. Here you will have the opportunity to try some of the region’s legendary ports, something not to be missed if you have a taste for the stuff.

Those are just a few of the many highlights you can expect to see on a Douro river cruise through Portugal’s north. Enjoy your trip and don’t forget to keep your camera batteries charged!
